Open Your Hands

Posted on

Step 1: Open your hands to let go of what you are not meant to hold onto. There’s this feeling that always intrigues me. After a day spent wearing high heels, when I take my shoes off and begin walking around the room, it feels funny; the floor feels slightly tilted.. I know the floor […]

Midnight Kisses – Happy New Year!

How does one embrace the New Year? With a midnight kiss? With cheers and confetti showers? With fireworks or gunshots? With resolutions to live more passionately, love more purposely, and take better care of oneself? All of the above, of course! I love that this time of year beckons each of us for a fresh […]

Recipe of the Week, Month, Year, LIFETIME!

This is just TOO good not to share, especially if you don’t live in the Pacific Northwest! But first, let me back up so you know just HOW thrilled I am with this recipe. I am on journey right now to reclaim my spiritual, mental and physical health.  Knowing that our body, soul/mind, and spirit […]

Dancing in the Storm – 10 perks of being sick all summer long…

Merry Freedom Day!

Happy Independence Day! On this day we celebrate FREEDOM, so I decided to take a little time to explore what this means to me and what stepping stone I am standing on in my personal journey of Becoming Merry.

This is what I found from some wisemen:

  • Freedom lies in being bold. ~Robert Frost
  • He who is brave is free. ~Seneca  (1st century Roman philosopher)
  • If you are not free to choose wrongly and irresponsibly, you are not free at all. ~ Jacob Hornberger
  • Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes. ~ Gandhi
  • Man is free at the moment he wishes to be. ~Voltaire

Can you see what is already brewing on my heart? Freedom requires boldness and bravery, which to me sounds a lot like confidence or self-assurance. But it also requires the ability to allow ourselves (and I would imagine OTHERS) to make wrong choices, mistakes and be irresponsible. It sounds good, and I’d love to claim that I live this way ALL the time! But I’m on a journey to become a better me, and I will be truthful (because the truth sets us free). Part of that betterment DOES include these two areas: boldness and forgiveness. The perfectionist side of me struggles with both, but I know that in freedom is where MY freedom lies! You see, I am very confident if I set forth to do something that I know I am good at. But when I muster up the courage to try something new or challenging and it flops, my confidence usually takes a little hit. I don’t always allow myself to make mistakes and have sometimes even avoided an opportunity to keep from messing up. I am my own worst enemy when it comes to realizing that I made a bad choice.  However, I am really good at allowing my children a safe place to make a mistake or wrong choice. And I’m a quick-to-forgive-others sort of gal.

So today, on Independence Day, I am going to be set free. Ready? Here it goes! This is the moment I choose to be free, and I am taking Voltaire’s quote as a challenge! I am free to allow myself mistakes and wrong choices and to remember that when I DO make a mess, it is because: I am brave! I am bold! I am free! I am forgiven!

This is what the bible says in Gal 5:1.

NIV – It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

MESS – Christ has set us free to live a free life. So take your stand! Never again let anyone put a harness of slavery on you.

NLT – So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.

Enjoy your day of freedom, friends! And if you choose to be set free  of something today and I have inspired you in any way to do so, please share so I can celebrate it with you!!

Merry Mary

Welcome to {becomingMerry}, and welcome to my very first blog post. I’ll start with a little background to get things off the ground.

Become (verb) – to come into existence; to undergo change or development

Becoming (adj) – attractively suitable; fitting

Merry (adj) – delightful, full of high spirits, marked by festivity, laughing, and joyous associated with singing and dancing

Marybitterness, beloved, strong, strengthening, shining over the sea (sea star), the child we hoped for

My name is Mary, and I am stepping into my name. I took the liberty to cross off the word that did not belong, by the way! And in crossing that off and out of my life, I am replacing it with the opposite of bitterness: JOY, or to rhyme with my name, MERRY!

Throughout my life, people have called me ‘Mary Mary’. This probably came from the Mary who was ‘quite contrary’. Back in my high school days, there was a song by Run DMC called Mary, Mary that I would get serenaded with almost daily. I was never bothered by the doubling up of my name as people recited poetry to me, asked me how my garden grew, or sang to me they needed my huggin’, and I have since really come to love my name.

I’m at a place in my life where JOY is not only desired and invited, but it is sought after and fought for! My goal is to become joy as I become Mary (I’m still in the process of becoming who I am), so why not become Merry! I am changing my name, sort of, but not really. I am just going to embrace who I am and choose to be Merry Mary.

Join me as I embrace this journey! I welcome your comments and look forward to getting to know you!
